Two transgender Pakistanis were tortured to death in Saudi Arabia, leading LGBTQ activists across the globe to demand answers from the nation.

A total of 35 transgender people were arrested during the raid of whom two died in custody on Tuesday.

The police raided a rest house where a meeting of transgender community was taking place for the selection of their leader. The "Khwaja Sara" is a Pakistani term for third gender people including transvestites, transsexuals, and transgenders.

A transgender rights activist said only 11 of the 35 had been released after paying a fine of 150,000 riyals, meaning 22 are still in custody.

The actions of the police have been met with strong criticism from transgender rights groups.

Homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia and it is alleged that the women were arrested for cross-dressing and having same-sex relationships.

'Torturing humans after throwing them into bags and beating them with sticks is inhumane, ' Naseem said, according to the Pakistan Tribune.

Colonel Fawaz bin Jameel alMaiman, the police's media spokesperson, said the site had been under "constant surveillance".

One transgender woman, Farzana, warned that the Saudi government would not allow trans people to perform the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, "Hajj", as well as the "Umrah" pilgrimage.

The Travel Agents Association of Pakistan was reportedly told past year not to grant visas to transgender people planning the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage. In 2009, 67 men were arrested in Riyadh for wearing women's clothing, according to Human Rights Watch.
