49ers trying to land coveted Patriots coach for DC job

Report: Kyle Shanahan interested in bringing Matt Schaub to 49ers

Once Shanahan and his Atlanta Falcons conclude their Super Bow LI matchup with the New England Patriots, the current offensive coordinator will start building a staff in San Francisco.

"I hate the term rebuilding because it gives people a built in excuse", York said.

"I hope that I'm preparing a lot, I hope that I'm prepared".

Because of National Football League tampering rules, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York can't openly discuss presumptive next head coach Kyle Shanahan.

York found his own not-so-subtle ways of strongly hinting at who the franchise's next coach is while appearing on the NFL Network's red carpet show before the awards show on Saturday night. According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, Shanahan will likely interview New England Patriots' linebackers coach Brian Flores for the defensive coordinator position with 49ers.

There's been a ton of rumors about who might join Shanahan with the 49ers. That's expected to happen in short order after that game, though, and it's reasonable to expect the team to introduce Shanahan as the coach next week. He began in the scouting department before shifting to coaching in 2008.

"I will be cheering for the Falcons", York said, laughing. "I don't really think about what's in the future. I just try to get better every day and just try and prepare the guys as best I can every day. Obviously, you've covered John a little bit, you know him. I don't think there's anybody who has more integrity or cares about the game more, that has as much passion and as much work ethic".

York was referring to the rift in recent years between 49ers' GM Trent Baalke and coach Jim Harbaugh, and then Baalke and Chip Kelly that effectively and swiftly ruined a team that reached the Super Bowl in the 2012 season.
