When and where to watch the Westminster dog show

Meet Zsa Zsa an adorable ball of fluff

According to the New York Times, cats are joining the "meet the breeds" portion of the world-famous dog show for the first time in 140 years.

For the first time in the 140-year history of the prestigious competition honoring the world's finest dogs, the official program will also feature handsome felines strutting their stuff.

This year's show will also see the introduction of three new dog breeds: the American hairless terrier, an active and curious small breed dog with smooth hair; the mid-sized sloughi (pronounced sloo-ghee), a North African hunting dog; and the pumi, a Hungarian herding breed. For the first time in the esteemed history of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, cats will be entered in a competition specifically organized for cat lovers.

The 2017 event marks the eighth AKC Meet the Breeds, the return of TICA and the third year that the event is part of the exciting Westminster Week roster. Owners of this bushy-coated, curly-tailed, big eared breed hear "your dog's so CUTE!" so often that they've turned it into a "whimsical expression", the Associated Press reports.

In recent years, the show has expanded beyond traditional breed judging by adding agility and obedience competitions and a non-competitive "meet the breeds" event.

Derived from the rat terrier in the 1970s, the hypo-allergenic American hairless terrier does not have a fuzzy coat but never lacks energy or curiosity.

The show takes place February 11th, 13th and 14th in New York City. "Families can interact with several dog and cat breeds, talk to knowledgeable breeders and find the right pet to fit their lifestyle, all while having fun". PETA has accused the American Kennel Club of encouraging breeding with little care for the health of the dog.

Some animal-rights organizations, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), are staunchly critical of dog breeding, pointing out the millions of dogs in need of adoption. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.

We know all this change and progress may take a while to get used to, but we reckon we can get through it.
