Newborn Baby Abandoned in Laundry Basket at Cathedral

The Rev. John Ubel, the cathedral's rector, said in a statement that he immediately called police to notify them of the discovery.

Under the state's "Safe Place for Newborns" law, a mother can anonymously leave a newborn in a safe place, such as a hospital, though places of worship are not covered under that law.

Unfortunately, there is no database or organization tracking the number of babies surrendered via Safe Haven laws, according to Fusion.

A church maintenance worker found the newborn in a laundry bin wrapped in a blanket inside the Cathedral.

Furthermore, the St. Paul Police used the situation to remind and encourage parents to call 911 or go to the local hospital if there are any concerns with the ability to care for the welfare of their children.

Father Ubel believes, however, that the baby was left at the cathedral because the mother knew her son would be safe and cared for with the parish's help. "I froze for what seemed to be 10 seconds, but it was probably more". The umbilical cord was cut and clamped with a binder clip.

Police told the Star Tribune the baby is in good shape after being found.

"We're anxious that there's a mother out there that possibly could need some help", Ernster said. His is also proud of Leonhardt's quick actions.

"The mom never has to worry she's going to be prosecuted or tracked down, it's about keeping the baby safe", she said. "Absent any other information forthcoming, I think it's important that this child be given up for adoption, and there would be many willing Catholic couples who would welcome this child into their home". "I miss him already", Leonhardt said.

Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis representatives are expected to release further details Thursday afternoon during a news conference.
