Inside the Megyn Kelly-Fox News Split

Fox News star host Megyn Kelly will be leaving the network at the conclusion of her contract, according to a New York Times report.

Kelly's departure from Fox would close out an extremely hard year for the network after it had to deal with a sexual harassment scandal deriving from the actions of the network's founding chairman, Roger Ailes. He was ousted after several women, including Kelly, made allegations that he had sexually harassed them.

When Kelly was promoting her book, Settle for More, in which she added a chapter late in the process about her role in the Ailes scandal, O'Reilly accused her of making Fox News "look bad". While NBC and other networks had said they could not match the amount offered by Fox, it is likely the network came close and at least offered more than Kelly's current salary of $15 million per year.

December, 2015: During a discussion on Obama's statement in which he made a distinction between ISIS and Islam, Kelly argued that denying ISIS is Islamic is denying "reality". "And I'm deeply thankful to Fox News for the wonderful 12 years I have had here", Kelly shared. "But how they replace Megyn Kelly will give us a better understanding of what Fox News will be under the Murdoch brothers". Nor is a star anchor hinting that a Republican presidential candidate may have been involved in a plot to poison her, as Kelly seems to do in her book (written before the election) and totally disavowed while promoting it (after).

There is industry speculation that Kelly's 9 p.m. slot could be filled by Sean Hannity, who now airs at 10 p.m. Analysts say Fox News' choice to fill the void will also say a lot about how the network, often noted for courting conservatives, will re- adjust its identity, or not, in the post-Ailes era.

It appears that Fox News is now taking the approach of a modern music radio station, where nearly every program must play the same very limited number of "hit" songs within an extremely focused genre of content. "Now that I've gotten into primetime things have become more competitive between us, just given the nature of where we are", she said referring to O'Reilly.

NBC confirmed Tuesday that Kelly will become the anchor of a new one hour daytime show airing daily Monday through Friday. Since 2013, Kelly has anchored FOX News Channel's (FNC) The Kelly File, which she helped to create.

Writing a short statement on Facebook, Kelly said that she will miss her Fox colleagues but is excited for the road ahead.

Earlier this morning, as The New York Times's Jim Rutenberg first reported, Kelly made her decision official. NBC attempted a prime-time Sunday-night show with Brian Williams, Rock Center, that was cancelled due to disappointing ratings. Kelly will now compete with Lauer, Lester Holt, and Savannah Guthrie (not to mention, perhaps, Chuck Todd and Joe Scarborough) for major interviews.
