Why Robin Williams Didn't Play Hagrid In The Harry Potter Films

Pretty much every Harry Potter fan out there absolutely loves Hagrid.

Meanwhile, Eddie Redmayne recently revealed that he once auditioned for a role in Harry Potter - and was turned down.

Robin Williams was turned down for a role in Harry Potter because he was from America, not Britain.

Other key roles for which Williams was considered included leads in The Shining, Philadelphia, Richard Attenborough's biopic of Charlie Chaplin and Gus van Sant's film about Harvey Milk.

That's only because producers enforced a "Brits-only" rule for the series.

The role of Hagrid ultimately went to Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, who played the part in all eight films in the blockbuster series.

In a new interview with the Huffington Post, casting director Janet Hirshenson revealed that the 63-year-old comedian, who died in 2014, called director Chris Columbus about the part of the loveable Hogwarts groundskeeper.

The first movie in the "Harry Potter" franchise was directed by Chris Columbus. Even though it was an animated character, just look at what he was able to bring to the role of Genie in Aladdin.

Ahead of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone hitting cinemas back in 2001, a casting call was issued all over the United Kingdom to find J. K. Rowling's on-screen wizarding community. Not counting Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Harry Potter movies made a grand total of $7.72 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful franchises ever. Still, it's always fun to imagine how different these things could have worked out.
