CNN uses 'Fallout 4' hacking terminal picture in story on Russian cyberattack

As Alfred Ng wrote for CNET, it is highly unlikely that alleged Russian hackers used Pip-Boys, a game device within the Fallout play environment, to disrupt the United States election. In Fallout 4, players solve word puzzles in mini games to "hack" computers and unlock doors and safes, although there is nothing about the play of the game that resembles real-world hacking processes.

Although considering how easy it was for the Russians/400-pound hacker from New Jersey to phish John Podesta's email password, maybe the image is appropriate. So, news networks who need b-roll footage to show while they're talking about hacking usually just show keyboards or random strings of letters and numbers, while the audience stares blindly at the screen, assuming that whatever they're looking at is somehow related to the topic. That, as you may know, has nothing to do with the kind of hacking CNN was reporting on. For those unaware, CNN originally aired the story on December 28 of the past year, with the piece covering President Obama proposing sanctions against Russian Federation for its supposed role in cyberattacks targeting the United States.

Redditor Poofylicious posted to a Fallout 4 subreddit a still image of what appears to be a computer terminal from Bethesda Softworks' newest Fallout game.

Reddit first spotted the mistake or possible glitch in the Matrix, and it says that the fact that the image comes from Fallout 4 is about as plain as the nose on your face. And if you want to get into one of the many locked monochrome consoles in Fallout 4, you'll have to solve a hacking game, too.
