Killer whale J2 - Granny - presumed dead

J-2 called Granny in 2010

The almost century-old orca who swam in the seas near Washington state nicknamed "Granny" has likely passed away, according to the Center for Whale Research. The center concluded that Granny has passed away since she was last spotted in October.

The Center for Whale Research wrote on its Facebook page Monday that it was saying goodbye to the 105-year-old orca who was loved by the whale watching community.

"We have now seen J2 thousands of times in the past 40 years and in recent years, she had been in the lead of J pod virtually any time that she had been seen by anyone", he wrote. She was thought to be at least 45 years old and perhaps as old as 76. "With regret we now consider her deceased".

Granny lived with a group of two dozen orcas.

The oldest southern resident killer whale has died, according to the Center for Whale Research, which is based in Washington state.

J2's death comes weeks after 18-year-old Jpod resident J34 was found dead near Sechelt. J2 was considered a southern resident, which have seen their population decline.
