Toronto sisters in Nigeria apologize after allegations of blackmailing billionaire

Toronto sisters Kiran and Jyoti Matharoo pose in an Instagram post

The sisters, who are from Toronto, are also reportedly accused of cyber-bullying more than 200 people based in various regions of Africa.

"We apologize to Femi Otedola and his family, especially his wife and children, and all the other petitioners", she said, adding they created platforms called where people were able to send in stories.

According to reports out of Lagos, Nigeria, they have been charged with cyberbullying and extortion. Politics Nigeria posted in their December 23 report a "Criminal Undertaking" court document which mentions a person by the same name and details several allegations involving the platforms.

"They told them that, this is what they have on them, these are the image they have".

In the YouTube video, the women claim they received no money from the website and that they had no intention of trying to extort people.

"The intention was not to hurt anyone or to be malicious", the statement goes on. One sister, who appears to be Jyoti, holds a cell phone, appearing to read the apology from it while the other stands silently beside her. We promise not to say anything of the contrary to what we are saying now. That plan was scrapped after a private investigation turned up their plot and they were arrested.

Global Affairs Canada confirmed to CTV News Tuesday that consular services are being provided to "the Canadian citizens who have been detained in Lagos, Nigeria".

The sisters, Kiranjot and Taranjot Matharoo, better known as Kiran and Jyoti and residents of Toronto, appear in the video apologizing to Nigerian oil tycoon Femi Otedola and his family.

The sisters have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to next appear in court on January 26.
